The world's most popular fruit is the banana, which originated in the very-much overlooked region of Polynesia. This interesting video explores the relationship between the peoples and cultures of New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands and the world's most popular fruit, the banana.

  • Excuse the pedantry, but I understand that the banana is, strictly speaking, not a fruit, but a berry. Stephen Fry said so on QI, so it must be true.

  • Fruit is a more general category than berry, so all berries are fruit. Whether it's really a berry is also a question because the skin is thick, and when not one of the parthenocarpic varities that develop without pollination, the big shiny seeds fill the pulp. Berries typically have tiny seeds.
